Ever wonder what it takes to get that perfect family picture? With the holiday season fast approaching, here are five tips on how to capture the best pictures of your kids before booking your family photo shoot, from Whippersnappers, a photo studio franchise based in Bend, Oregon.
1. Be sure to schedule the session during a time that is good for your children by avoiding regular nap and meal times.
2. Keep your stress level in check. Your kids can really pick up on it, and it may affect the photo shoot, so plan ahead - have a wardrobe ready to go (in the car) and pack the "mom kit" with wet wipes, stain stick, snacks, water, hair products, etc.
3. Ensure their comfort in a new environment. For younger kids, take their favorite toy, teddy bear or blankie with them. With older kids, have them bring something that reflects their hobbies to include in the photo session, like a guitar, easel, books, etc. They will enjoy it and you're sure to get genuine expressions.
4. Talk to the photographer about what you want before the session. Photography is an art, and you'll want to make sure the photographer's style is a good fit with your own, so good communication beforehand will help to ensure you get the photos you are expecting. And consider where you are going to get the prints. Then, choose clothes that will match that room. Also, let your photographer know if you need your prints to be horizontal, vertical or square.
5. If the unexpected happens, go with it. Kids start horsing around during the shoot? Encourage the photographer to capture the laughter and fun. Your little one plops down on the floor in a shy heap? Could be the sweetest photo of the group.
