I was excited when VTech contacted me to do a review on their new V.Reader ($59.99). VTech was one of my mother's favorite go-to brands when it came to buying educational toys for me as a child. I still fondly remember my first computer, the VTech Talking Whiz Kid Notebook!

The V.Reader has been described as the "Kindle" or "Nook" for kids (ages 3 and up). Personally, I've never used any of those devices, but I'm sold if they're anywhere near as entertaining as the V.Reader! Now, I'm wanting an eBook (Kindle or Nook) of my own. (lol) My son has even pushed the Nintendo DS aside to play his new Scooby Doo reading game ($19.99) that they included with the V.Reader. Even though each storybook cartridge is sold separately, the V.Reader System comes with a non-character based cartridge. My son is 4 years old, and this system has been helping him out a lot with his vocabulary. His new favorite word is elevator.

There are currently eight different storybook games available for the V.Reader: Scooby Doo, Toy Story 3, Dora the Explorer, Mr.Men & Little Miss, Little Engine, Olivia, Shrek 4 and Mickey Club House. All are for $19.99 each! There is even a pink version of the V.Reader System. Both versions became available to the public on June 21st, and you can buy it now at your local Target store or at Target.com.

Noteworthy Features

Animated Storyteller:
Stories come to life through vivid animation, narration, character voices, graphics, sounds and music. Young children engage with stories by watching, reading and learning. They follow their favorite character’s voice, play reading games and use the story dictionary.

Downloadable Fun: With a rich download library, more than 100 additional stories will be available via a download library located on the VTech web-site, including some free titles, more themes and avatars to customize their e-readers. V.Reader is compatible with a PC or Mac computer.

Track Progress:
Parents can join in on the fun and learning process with the features that include progress reports and reading certificates.

Touch and Read System:
Kids have two play options – listen and follow along to the story as read by animated characters; or touch the screen and play reading games to learn each word or sentence.

Reading Skills: Your child learns the necessary building blocks to grow into a fluent reader. V.Reader teaches reading comprehension, vocabulary, phonics and word building, along with a story dictionary that describes word definitions in a manner that’s easy for them to comprehend.

I was given a V.Reader by VTech for my review. I was allowed to keep the product, but the opinion I am sharing remains my own.
