Strawberry Jam Recipe
Summer's best friend is the berry! Luscious, red, juicy and bursting with flavor - what's not to like? What's more, whether you grow your own berries or depend on the farmers who grow berries for Driscoll’s, you know that they are not only at their best but plentiful too. So the next time you're at the market, pick up a few extra clamshells of Driscoll’s berries for a yummy DIY strawberry jam. It's easy and when you do it yourself you can personalize it with subtle nuances of flavors that take your jam from comfort food to gourmet. What's best is that you made it yourself!
Strawberry Jam
Makes roughly four half-pint jars
35 oz. Driscoll’s strawberries washed, hulled and cubed
35 oz. granulated white sugar
1 lemon, sliced
1 packet pectin, such as CERTO or Sure-Jell
1 Tbsp butter (to reduce foaming)
Method:
Combine the strawberries and sugar in a large, nonreactive pot; enamel or stainless steel are best. Let stand for at least 20 minutes, up to two hours.
Stir the contents of the pot well, and put over medium-high heat. Add the lemons, pectin and butter. Stir frequently, taking care not to burn the sugar. Bring to a boil and maintain a rolling boil. Skim away any foam that forms; if there is too much foam, add a little more butter.
Once a boil has been reached, take the temperature with a quick-read thermometer. Continue boiling and stirring until the mixture consistently reads 220ºF. Turn off the heat. Remove the lemon slices. If canning, process immediately (see On Canning, below). Otherwise, allow to cool, then pack in jars and refrigerate, or freezer-safe containers or bags if freezing.
For an extra berry punch, replace some of the strawberries with an equal amount of Driscoll’s® organic raspberries, blueberries or blackberries.
Or, once the jam reaches the target temperature, try giving yours a twist by adding one of the following:
- 1 Tbsp real balsamic and a few fresh cracks of black pepper
- 2 Tbsp Campari
- A handful of mint or basil, finely chopped
- Seeds from a vanilla bean
- Whatever you like
As a rule, fruit preserves can be canned using the water-bath method. Water-bath canning is not difficult, but it does require attention to detail. You’ll need some specific equipment (see Equipment, below), and you need to make sure your jars, lids and utensils are well sterilized.
The USDA publishes a very thorough guide to home canning, with excellent instructions on how to can safely. We recommend reviewing this carefully before canning. You can view the guide here.
Before you start cooking up your berries, make sure you have the following items:
- A large pot *
- A rack that fits in the bottom of the pot *
- A pair of canning tongs *
- A magnetic lid wand *
- A jar funnel *
- A ladle *
- A quick-read thermometer
- A kitchen scale
- Cooling racks to set the hot jars on
- Plenty of kitchen towels
- Plenty of jars, rings and unused lids
- Patience, and a sense of humor
Most of these items, as well as a variety of jars, lids and rings, are readily available in most hardware stores, as well as some grocery stores.
* You can often find kits that have all these elements together, rather than purchasing them separately.

I received a bold set in Hot Pink - a chemise, bra and thong. I normally wouldn't buy such a bold color in lingerie, but I love it since it allows me step outside my comfort zone and take a stroll down the wild side. I don't believe that this particular set is on their site yet. Otherwise, I'd have featured it with my review like I normally do with other reviews.
I'm definitely not a thong wearing person, but I love the chemise and bra! So bold and sexy. Plus, they're both comfortable and fit well. I'm so picky when it comes to bras. I usually don't purchase "affordable bras" (Chantelle, Cosabella, Wonderbra, Le Mystere and Felina are my go to brands) since you usually get what you pay for when it comes to high quality and support, but I honestly don't have any complaints about the bra that I received.

My son received one of the cutest outfits from Bit'Z Kids NYC , and I was beginning to think that all of the cute outfits were reserved for just girls! My little man loves clothes (just like his mom!), and he was thrilled to put on his new outfit. This outfit isn't listed on their site yet, but they have several cute ones to choose from that are listed on their site. The sizing runs differently considering it is a Japanese company. Therefore, I highly recommend referring to their size chart before you make a purchase!
I'll note that their clothes do run a little small. So you might want to purchase a size up just in case. My son is 4, and that means that he wears a size 110 according to their size chart. The tee and shorts look a little snug on his small body frame, but is seemingly comfortable for him since he didn't have any complaints. I honestly don't believe it will fit him when he turns 5 despite what their chart indicates.

I'm Ready for Some Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes!
I will be officially starting the Nutrisystem vegetarian program on July 6th after the holiday weekend! Hopefully, I'll be a good girl before then. I've been struggling to lose weight for a few months now. I was going through a rough patch over the winter time, and needless to say, the weight started piling on! I'd love to get back to my normal weight (130-135 lbs). Therefore, I'm hoping that Nutrisystem is the answer to my prayers. I know that a diet alone isn't the key to a successful weight loss. A mixture of walking, Moms Into Fitness DVDs and KettleWorx will also help accompany my weight loss.

Paula Deen Porcelain Nonstick 12 Piece Cookware Set Review
I received a $150 gift certificate to spend at CSN Stores (they have over 200 stores to shop from, gasp!), and I can't begin to tell you how thrilled I was to buy the Paula Deen Porcelain Nonstick 12 Piece Cookware Set in Orange ($114.95) that I have been having my eye on for awhile. I'm in the process of changing my kitchen theme, because I got so sick and tired of the Hello Kitty theme that I had for awhile. I'm opting for an orange, citrus yellow and sage green theme. Therefore, this cookware set fits right in with the theme that I'm aiming for!
I could barely contain my excitement when this cookware set first arrived. This set is truly more beautiful in person than it is in the pictures. Honestly, this is the best cookware set I've used up-to-date. It makes cooking even more enjoyable! I have used the set several times already, and I love how cleaning them is a breeze! I highly recommend hand-washing any non-stick cookware set, because dishwasher detergents are too harsh on most non-stick cookware. Also, be sure to keep the heat on a low or medium setting to keep the non-stick finish from blistering or the pans from warping. I'll admit that I love to take a couple of peeks at them when I'm not cooking and admire the state of art beauty of this set.

I was excited when VTech contacted me to do a review on their new V.Reader ($59.99). VTech was one of my mother's favorite go-to brands when it came to buying educational toys for me as a child. I still fondly remember my first computer, the VTech Talking Whiz Kid Notebook!
The V.Reader has been described as the "Kindle" or "Nook" for kids (ages 3 and up). Personally, I've never used any of those devices, but I'm sold if they're anywhere near as entertaining as the V.Reader! Now, I'm wanting an eBook (Kindle or Nook) of my own. (lol) My son has even pushed the Nintendo DS aside to play his new Scooby Doo reading game ($19.99) that they included with the V.Reader. Even though each storybook cartridge is sold separately, the V.Reader System comes with a non-character based cartridge. My son is 4 years old, and this system has been helping him out a lot with his vocabulary. His new favorite word is elevator.
There are currently eight different storybook games available for the V.Reader: Scooby Doo, Toy Story 3, Dora the Explorer, Mr.Men & Little Miss, Little Engine, Olivia, Shrek 4 and Mickey Club House. All are for $19.99 each! There is even a pink version of the V.Reader System. Both versions became available to the public on June 21st, and you can buy it now at your local Target store or at Target.com.

The Clear-N-Clean Plunger ($19.95) is a must have if you want to keep your bathroom hygienic as possible, because it is bacteria resistant and stays dry even after it has been submerged in water! I honestly never thought I'd be impressed with a toilet plunger of all things since I find most toilet plungers disgusting, but this one is a definite keeper since it is the cleanest plunger out there! Honestly, we get good use out of this plunger since my son always manage to stop up the toilet somehow. Boys and men!
The Clear-N-Clean Plunger is coated with a non-toxic NeverWet™ technology that keeps it from ever getting wet. A myriad of viruses and bacteria can be found in toilet water, but this plunger is immune to most bacteria and viruses such as E.coli, salmonella, stomach flu and shigella bacteria. Of course, most toilet plungers are not immune to this - yuck! While I can't test the plunger to see how true this is, I can honestly can say that water just rolls off the plunger. You don't even have to clean the Clear-N-Clean Plunger since it cleans itself. If you must clean it, clean with water only since soap will only damage the coating. Oil will also damage the coating in case you're tempted to rub some baby oil on it. Just kidding! Not kidding about the oil damaging the coating though. You should also never touch the head of the plunger If treated with care, the Clear-N-Clean Plunger is expected to last for thousands of plunges.
Now, if they will come out with a toilet brush.....
